We all love the warmth of the sun on our skin, our hair however is a different story. Too much sun and UV rays causes colour fading, brittleness, dryness, and a generally dull appearance to our locks.
In addition to this, summer also means swimming pools and sea. We’re talking excessive salt and chlorine content, both of which can suck the moisture out of your hair and leave it limp and lifeless.
The good news is, you are not doomed to remain pale skinned to keep your hair from drying out – there are plenty of things you can do, and products you can use, which can go a long way to avoiding summer hair damage. There’s no reason to miss out on that beach holiday you’ve worked so hard for after all!
Here are a few tips and tricks to try this summer:
It might sound obvious, but the best way to protect your hair is to cover it up! Indulge in a wide brimmed, fashionable hat and you’ll not only look after your locks, but you’ll be rocking the ultimate summer fashion too. This will also go a long way to helping you avoid the harmful effects of the sun on your hair and skin, including sunstroke.
Promote Your Conditioner To BFF
If you know anything about hair, you’ll know that conditioner is your number one friend. This is truer than ever in summer. Invest in a good quality conditioner, one which suits your hair type perfectly, and ideally has UV protection within it. Lather it on every time you wash your hair, and for extra protection from sun’s rays at the beach, coat your damp or dry hair with your favourite conditioning lotion or mask and let the heat do the rest of the work.
Shampoo With Care
Feeling hot and sweaty may have you jumping into the shower to wash your hair every day, but you don’t want to risk additionally stripping your scalp of its natural oils? Solution: go for a mild shampoo especially during the summer season and shampoo only the scalp, avoiding the length of your hair. This way, the suds being rinsed out will wash your hair as well and you’ll avoid over-drying your hair.
Heat and humidity are any curly girl’s worst nightmare. Admit it, you can almost feel your hair frizzing up just thinking about it. Best way to keep the frizz at bay during summer months? Show off your hair styling chops by wearing your hair tied (not too tightly, mind you!) into a whole range of different, trendy styles: low and high ponytails, messy buns and top-knots, braids…
Have Regular Trims
You’ll notice split ends and dry, fragile hair much more easily during the summer, so opt for a regular trim to tidy up your locks. This will give your hair an additional boost and and bounce and help you keep it happy, shiny, and full of life.
